Now, on to the responses.Matt Carpenter, Cardinals: Im probably a guy whos a little different, who might go against the grain, but I would say for me, the 2-2 count is a big count. Its a big swing count, in terms of getting to 3-2 because thats a huge advantage over a 2-2 count.David Ro s, Red Sox: Theyre all important, to be honest with you. But 1-1s really important. I mean, 0-0 is important to me as a catcher, but as the biggest swing count, its 1-1. From 2-1 to 1-2 is huge. Its a big pitch. (NOTE: I had asked Ro s a few questions about instant replay earlier in the interview, and he comes back to that topic here ) Thats another thing that I dont think (umpires) understand the magnitude of, how important the swing of one little call can be. You mi s a 1-1 pitch, with the bases loaded, and it changes things a lot, when you mi s any pitch as an umpire. Thats why catchers, were starting to get graded on how many strikes that we get, framing. That stuffs getting to be a bigger deal because they realize how much every pitch matters.Jhonny Peralta, Cardinals: The more important ones are early in the count. The first pitch is good to swing. Depends on the situation, too, but for me I like to swing at the first pitch. If youre ahead in the count and in a good hitters count, youve got him right where you want him, and the balls in your court. Youve got to make him throw something over the plate where you want it, and if not, you take your walk and move on. Those are all counts where youre looking for a fastball or looking for something to drive. But Id say 1-0 kinda determines where an at-bat might go. If they get a strike right there, the counts even. The 1-0s one of those where, if you let the pitch go by, that might be the only Drew Hutchison Jersey one you get. But any of the hitting counts are important to make something happen. At least for me, when Im 0-1 or 0-2 or 1-2, behind in the count, I kinda go with a different approach, just trying to put the ball in play.
